Sustainable Private Credit SME Financing

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are largely financed through the bond market and private credit. The investors and lenders behind these instruments typically have a long-term investment horizon and assess a company’s full risk profile based on the expected challenges over the lifetime of the loans. Sustainability risks (ESG risks) are a particularly important component in determining a specific company’s risk premium.

=> The attached, highly interesting report from Nordsip, Sustainable Private Credit, highlights the questions and requirements that investors place on SMEs regarding ESG risks. (Feb. 2026)

Resilience and Responsibility of the Board

As the Chairman of a company's Board, can you say that you and your board members are on top of the sustainability challenges and opportunities?

End clients continue to gradually shift buying patterns towards sustainable alternatives. If your company is part of a supply chain, demand for data transparency in reporting is high and growing.

Is sustainability integrated well enough into your company's strategy and business model?

Please find a short and focused article (from OneStop ESG) on climate risk and how it has become a test of board oversight. In summary:

Boards are expected to oversee:
- Physical risks affecting facilities, logistics, and supply chains
- Transition risks tied to regulation, technology, and market shifts
- Nature-related risks linked to land use, water availability, and ecosystem dependency
- Effective boards focus less on whether risks are disclosed and more on whether they are understood and managed.

In practice, this means:
- Climate and nature risks are reviewed as strategic risks, not technical footnotes
- Scenario analysis informs investment and planning decisions
- Environmental risks are integrated into enterprise risk frameworks

Sustainable capitalism, redefined by the largest sovereign wealth fund

The largest sovereign wealth fund in the world is in Norway and is managed by Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM). It partly owns approximately 8,500 listed companies worldwide, with a combined value exceeding USD 2 trillion.

In its updated Climate Action Plan, NBIM further details how it will manage its climate-related financial risks by, e.g., steering the companies it owns toward net zero emissions. The new Plan also focuses on other nature-related impacts.

NBIM stresses the importance of making corporate management understand that environmental changes will influence companies’ long-term financial stability. Companies’ valuations will benefit from a solid, long-term, sustainable strategy. “Climate risk is financial risk” (CEO NBIM). (Nov 2025)

Have CSRD-aligned sustainability reports changed upstream supply chain transparency, and how are SMEs affected?

In today’s world of urgent environmental and climate challenges, transparent reporting of upstream greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is essential. A master’s thesis, in Leadership and Organization for Sustainability (by Niklas Olsson and Patrik Dahlén), examined whether the EU’s CSRD improves transparency in such disclosures among large, listed companies. The study focused on supply chain transparency, a key element in reaching the EU’s net-zero 2050 goals.

Through comparative document analysis, sustainability reports from Kone, Wärtsilä, Schneider Electric, and TotalEnergies were reviewed, comparing pre-CSRD (2020) and post-CSRD (2024). Grounded in Stakeholder and Legitimacy Theory, the research explored shifts in reporting practices and stakeholder engagement.

Findings show the CSRD has led to broader stakeholder recognition and greater disclosure detail. However, challenges remain in clarity, consistency, and accessibility, making reports difficult to compare. Improved communication and stakeholder-oriented structuring are needed for CSRD to fulfill its goals of transparency and accountability.

Suppliers to large corporations—often SMEs—must also meet stricter sustainability requirements, usually outlined in clients’ Codes of Conduct. Paranthropus Consulting helps SMEs respond effectively to these demands, strengthening both compliance and long-term business resilience. (Sept 2025)
